NY Rho and TX Delta Join Forces at DC Hike to Prevent Veteran Suicide
While attending Grand Conclave in Denver earlier this year, our AVC President, Gabe Vazquez was able to meet many SigEps from around the country. One of these brothers, a fellow military veteran, was Texas Delta brother, Terry Chung. While sharing their stories and some of the hardships of life during and after the time serving our country, they realized that they had something else in common. USMC Ret. Sgt. Major Todd Parisi had made a significant positive impact on their military experience. This decorated military veteran, esteemed motivational speaker, and co-founder of a local youth group, who had touched so many lives had also recently died by suicide.
Affected by the loss, but empowered by their brotherhood, Gabe and Terry agreed to make a difference by attending an Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike. Irreverent Warriors is an organization of military veterans whose mission is to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide through support and camaraderie. Gabe was able to host Terry at his home in Northern Virginia so that both could attend the event and nine-mile hike in Washington DC on October 9th. The event had a large turnout and the brothers were able to build relationships with other veterans, reinforcing the network of support and embodying the cardinal principal of Brotherly Love.
